[GR] - The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood - Review

Hello! Here with my first review. I might be rusty, but let's be honest, no one is gonna read this hoping for me to be a new gaming guru or something, so I will just say what I want to say and ramble a lot, probably.

This game was something between cozy and a lot to read. The kind of narrative adventure game that I can fit tight into my torso in the few hours that the story takes to develop. Steam says I played 13 hours but let's turn that down to 8 aprox because I surely had lunch and left the game running afterwards while having a nap with a full belly.

Two well spent afternoons, in my opinion.

So, The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood. The game was released in 2023, it was developed by deconstructeam and published by Devolver Digital (who btw brought to us Cult of the Lamb, to mention one of my favorites). It's available to play on Nintendo Switch and PC. It's a single player narrative AND creative game.

The story is that you are a witch, condemned to spend 1000 years living in a meteor to think about something you predicted with your cards already 200 years ago. In your desperation, you summon a Behemot, a cosmic demon that will help you regain your freedom and help your dying coven (or not), for a price, of course.

Through the story you will make choices, meet very sexy people, and even be able to peep into the heart and mind of the demon you summoned. The main attraction of the game is that you can create a new divination deck through a three step system by paying a game currency you can easily get througout the story. Here's some of my favorites I made.

The combinations are quite unique since you can arrange the background, the main figure and the complementary elements as much as you wish, so no card will ever be the same. Never. The elements and outcomes of your divination spreads are limited to the ones the story can offer tho.

There's also mini interactive story games, they are quite unique and fun to play, I love when games have mini-games.

Now for my opinion.

I really love the aesthetic, the story, even the freedom of speech of the game that takes toll on life aspects like sex, gender identity, defiying the status quo and "a means to an end" -hence you summoning a cosmic demon to help (or not) your coven-. It's a really simple game, centered on the art and the story rather than awesome graphics and special effects. If you play it absolutely blindly, better, because the blind experience makes all your answers think about yourself a lot.

I fell in love with EACH AND EVERYONE of the characters. In this world, only "women" can be witches, but it shows a vast variety of women that are not just that. There's transgender characters, non-binary ones, even other agender species that make the cut to be witches. Ascension to inmortality is more about identity than just genitals, and I think it's well played in the narrative.

All character's aesthetics are GOAT and if you happen to be on my patreon you might already have seen them all or most of them, since I was non stop sending game screenshots (also I will probably make a couple sketches, what can I say? I'm a real sucker for a well designed woman).

They all have a story to tell, advise to give, and something to teach. All the story is a philosophical journey to what it means to oneself to be inmortal and to do the correct thing, wether it serves the whole community, or just you. Since the beggining of the game, all your decisions are important. You might think what you decide is "just the safe option" but even that might affect something important later on. Choose whatever feels best for you, I can assure you, even the worst surprises are delightful to discover.

There's multiple game routes and multiple game endings. I got a bittersweet ending tho. Nothing against that, my choices lead me to that ending, but I might appreciate having a save file just before the final decision, just to see what could have happened right after instead of having to play the game all over again. It will probably take me some time to consider going through all eight hours of gameplay, I'm those kind of people that enjoy the experience once and then can't feel the same with a re-run (yet I've watched Shrek 2 about 82357 times just this week). Still, if you like story-line centered, cozy, relaxing, creative games (and you like witchy stuff, of course) you might really enjoy this one.

And to finish, my rating is 9.8 over 10. My literally only complain is that "pre-ending" save file. I really recommend the game to anyone that has a spare day to play something chill and think about their existence within the cosmos.

Interesting facts:

  • Deconstructeam is based in Valencia, Spain. I enjoyed a lot to play the game in spanish (my native language) and see all the culture references and homages made.
  • All characters seem to be LGBT coded. Even the demon somehow
  • The aesthetic is pleasing, it doesn't use ovesaturated colors, and it's full pixelart.
  • Sorry if I make typos. Will happen again.
